Good interface design is mostly editing. It removes steps that exist for internal reasons, names things the way customers name them, and puts the next action where the eye already is. A layout that only works at one screen width is not a finished design.
Signs the interface is the problem
Traffic is not always the issue. Often people arrive, then leave because the next step is hard.
- Visitors reach the page they need but do not act on it.
- Forms are started far more often than they are finished.
- Mobile visitors convert at a fraction of the rate of desktop visitors.
- Your team keeps answering questions the site should already answer.
- Every new page looks slightly different from the last.
Research before drawing
Design starts with the people who will use it: what they came to do, what they already know, and where the current experience loses them. That comes from analytics, session recordings, support tickets and, where the budget allows, conversations with real customers. Only then does anything get drawn.
From audit to handover
UX audit
The current experience reviewed, with findings ranked by what they cost you.
Structure
Information architecture, user flows and wireframes, agreed before any visual design.
Interface
Designed at mobile, tablet and desktop widths, with a clickable prototype for testing.
Design system
Type, colour, spacing, components and states written as rules, so later pages stay consistent.
Handover
Specifications, assets and interaction notes developers can build from.
Accessibility is specified, not assumed
Contrast ratios, focus states, keyboard paths, touch-target sizes and reduced-motion behaviour are written into the design rather than left for a developer to guess. It makes the interface usable by more people, and accessibility is increasingly a legal requirement in Europe and North America.
Design only, or design and build
Designs can go to your own developers or another agency, with the specification detail that requires. Or the same project can continue into the build — see web development.
Before you commission a redesign
The audit answers that. A set of targeted changes to the pages that matter often beats a full redesign, and if so we will say so.
Every layout is designed at mobile, tablet and desktop widths, rather than shrunk down from a desktop design.
